Merging Aerial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Satellite Multispectral Data to Inventory Archaeological Sites

چکیده

Introduction Outcomes attributable to the research funded through the 2005 NCPPT grant can be summarized as follows: 1) Protocols for the detection of archaeological sites through the analysis of commercially available synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and multispectral images. Previously existing protocols for site detection through image analysis had utilized images generated from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collected by an experimental JPL/NASA platform. 2) Strong evidence that the revised protocols can produce archaeological site signatures in environments characterized by moderate ground cover (i.e., tall grasses, large and dense shrubs, some forested areas usually comprised of small trees) and generally severe terrain. Previous protocols were developed and tested in an environment that was generally flat and covered by light vegetation (i.e., grasses and small shrubs).

Interpretation of Aerial Photographs and Satellite SAR Interferometry for the Inventory of Landslides

An inventory of landslides with an indication of the state of activity is necessary in order to establish hazard maps. We combine interpretation of aerial photographs and information on surface displacement from satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry for mapping landslides and intensity classification. Sketch maps of landslides distinguished by typology and depth, including geo...

Detection of Archaeological Residues in Vegetated Areas Using Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar

Buried archaeological structures, such as earthworks and buildings, often leave traces at the surface by altering the properties of overlying material, such as soil and vegetation. These traces may be better visible from a remote perspective than on the surface. Active and passive airborne and spaceborne sensors acquiring imagery from the ultraviolet to infrared have been shown to reveal these ...

Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Using Laplace Distribution

Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the...
